Why do I write about

the Holy Spirit?

1st, because I am interested in this subject and the reality of the Holy Spirit since I became a Christian. I remember when I was in the Christian youth group, the EC, the leading deaconess introduced a book to me, written by Tozer with the title “the forgotten power”, a book about the Holy Spirit. I was very impressed by this book. Later, when I started to study at the theological seminary, I studied a lot about life in the Holy Spirit, practical and theological. 2nd, my wife and I were missionaries for 12 years in Taiwan and 12 years in Thailand. I discovered that there was not much mentioning off the Holy Spirit in the sermons, much less preaching about the Holy Spirit. In Germany it is the same, of course depending on the denominational background of the church. 3rd, recently I read about a book written by the famous theologian Scott McKnight with the title “open to the spirit. God in us, God with us, God transforming us”. I was wondering and asking myself why does he write a book today about the Holy Spirit? He must see a necessity, a lack of knowledge and lack of living with the Holy Spirit. I ordered the book from England and it is very interesting and helpful. 4th, thinking about Scott McKnight's book about the Holy Spirit I remembered the book written by Billy Graham with the title “the Holy Spirit”, published in the year of 1978 by Word Books. I believe the relevance of Graham's book is still great in our time.
He had various reasons, let me mention two. He was much impressed by 2 famous persons, he writes, the famous theologian Karl Barth and Pope John who made two important statements about the Holy Spirit. I quote from his book. First Pope John. Billy Graham writes:”before he died, Pope John was asked what church doctrine most needed reemphasis today. He replied,”the Holy Spirit”” 2nd, Karl Barth. Billy Graham writes “a number of years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of spending a brief vacation in Switzerland as the guests of Dr. Karl Barth, the noted Swiss theologian. During the course of our conversations I asked him what he thought the next emphasis on theology would be. He replied without hesitation, “the Holy Spirit.”” So Billy Graham was encouraged that he should write about the Holy Spirit. What role does the Holy Spirit have in your life? Is he empowering you and are you growing spiritually every day? Let us not neglect this important aspect of our spiritual life. Why then is the Holy Spirit so important for us? The Desire for Forgiveness. In the introduction of his book Graham (page 11 ) writes about the importance of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the 2 great spiritual needs of humankind. I quote “man has two spiritual needs. One is for forgiveness. The other is for goodness. Consciously or unconsciously, his inner being longs for both. There are times when man actually cries for them, even though in his restlessness, confusion, loneliness, fear, and pressures he may not know what he is crying for. God heard that 1st cry for help, that cry for forgiveness, and answered it at Calvary. God sent His only Son into the world to die for our sins, so that we might be forgiven. This is a gift for us – God's gift of salvation. This gift is a permanent legacy for everyone who truly admits he has “fallen short”and sinned. It is for everyone who reaches out and accepts God's gift by receiving Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Paul calls it God's “indescribable” gift (2 Cor. 9:15). The desire for goodness But God also heard our second cry, that cry for goodness, and answered it at Pentecost. God does not want us to come to Christ by faith, and then lead a life of defeat, discouragement, and dissension. Rather, He wants to “fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you” (2. Thess. 1:11,12). To the great gift of forgiveness God adds also the great gift of the Holy Spirit. He is the source of power who meets our need to escape from the miserable weakness that grips us. He gives us the power to be truly good.” So far Billy Graham, and I would like to ask you, are you ready to learn more about the Holy Spirit and to live with Him and let Him bless your life?
